I was elated, really, to discover through my research on our air quality that the Canadian government both federal and provincial along with health and environmental organizations, and the major industrial sectors actually got together (over 5 years) to study and set new air quality standards! We now have new standards to lower limits on fine particulate matter & ground level ozone, a long time in coming but after Kyoto was cancelled I feared that the government would just ignore the situation. I believe pressure from the health and environmental groups actually spurred the government to act so kudos to them.
With regards to our indoor air, it is strictly up to the individual to pinpoint the air quality issues and deal with them. It is possible that every room in our home can be causing air quality problems. We have had problems in our bathroom. Four women, poor husband, the shower barely has time to dry before someone else is in there. We have dealt with the problem over and over again, now I’m getting tough. We have again gotten rid of the mold, ventilated the space and I am running the air purifier in the upstairs hall. An air purifier with the right filtration will help filter out and eliminate mold spores, odors and irritants caused by the mold. I have the Allerair 5000 Exec which works wonderfully in our space. However what I have discovered from my research is that the purifiers with a UV light will work even better when it comes to dealing with large mold problems. You can get the 5000 Exec with the UV and for larger area’s the Allerair 6000 Exec or for the more sensitive individuals there is the Allerair AirMedic+ Exec. Both these products are available with UV.
Previously I have gone over the terminology used in air purification and have done research on the different air purifiers out there. Today I want to go over the different technologies used in the industry.
Let’s start with the HEPA only units. Now these units are very effective in removing airborne particles, but are not designed for dealing with the gases, odors or chemicals so often present in our indoor space. This brings us to the carbon treated filters which so many manufacturers have incorporated into their units. The problem with these filters is that they use a form of foam media and often have only a quarter or an eighth of an inch of carbon. In order for carbon to be effective you need pounds of activated carbon. Depending on the level of pollutants present in the environment, units such as the Allerair 5000 Series or the Allerair 6000 Series with anywhere from 18lbs of carbon and up is required to deal with these issues and will last for up to 5 years.
This brings us to the Ozone-generating air purifiers. These units do emit ozone, either intentionally or as a by-product of their design. Now some may refer to ozone as activated oxygen and imply that ozone is harmless. Ozone is dangerous and is also ineffective as an air cleaner. Ozone can potentially cause serious health problems which brings us to the Electrostatic precipitators. The EPA and the American lung association both advise against using electrostatic precipitators as they work using a powerful electric field to charge airborne particles and a collector plate to trap them in the unit. A by-product of these machines is a small measure of ozone, which can be toxic.
In closing I must reintegrate what I have been saying all along. When looking into purification of your indoor air, do your homework. I have researched many of the different manufacturers of air purifiers and strongly believe that Allerair is one of the leading companies which not only build their units based on solid research but continually strive to develop new and innovative purification methods.
I think that I should elaborate on the different types of Allerair air purifiers. Depending on your indoor air quality needs, there is a unit to fit your requirements. For the optimal air filtration for homes and businesses there is the 5000 series. These purifiers are very popular with activated carbon for chemical, gas & odor control plus a HEPA filter for particle control. They cover up to 1500 sq ft and have a CFM (cubic feet per minute) of 400. For heavy-duty air filtration for contaminated environments the 6000 series is ideal for large homes, businesses and industries with a continuous source of pollution. It has the most complete protection available. Deeper activated carbon bed, HEPA filters and pre-filters, it has a CFM of 400 and covers up to 1800 sq ft. For those with allergies, asthma, or MCS there is the AirMedic and AirMedic+.
Now this is where Allerair steps it up. These units are built to your unique sensitivities! First a carbon test kit is sent out with 5 different carbon blends enabling you to choose a blend which does not worsen your symptoms. These units are the most inert air cleaners on the market today. Built with water based binders & a powder-coated all-metal housing, there is no rubber on the gaskets and they have an organic cotton pre-filter, fully burnt in motor, a medical-grade HEPA filter with a metal cap and a powder coated activated carbon filter canister.
These units cover from 1500 to 1800 sq ft and have a CFM from 360 to 400 depending on the unit. For those who need a portable air purifier there is the AirTube series. With the filtration power of a serious air cleaner these little beauties are the perfect fit for the frequent traveler or for use on desktops and small spaces measuring up to 100 sq ft. These units are popular with those suffering from allergy and asthma for which filtration of airborne particles, chemicals and odors is a must, no matter where they are. Well there you have it, I surely hope this is helpful, and one last bit of information is that all the Allerair air purifiers have a noise level of 50-75dB.
I know firsthand that when buying an air purifier you need to do your homework. I know this because I did not. I am currently trying to quit smoking not only for the health benefits but frankly it embarrasses me. So when I was in discussion with the manufacturer on what unit would work in my home I did not mention that I smoke. Dumb, Dumb Dumb! Don’t get me wrong, I try not to smoke in the house, but the rain does force me in.
Now I love my air purifier, however because I did not understand at the time , different units for different indoor air quality issues, this unit is going to cost me more in the long run. Depending on the square footage of your space, your personal air quality as well as any issues such as asthma or allergies, you can get the right air purifier. In this case I should have purchased the Allerair 5000 DS which not only has an extra deep-bed carbon but a tar trapping filter which protects the HEPA filter from being clogged up with the sticky residue left behind from smoking.
Unfortunately opening a window, or smoking next to an extractor fan will not reduce the exposure to second-hand smoke. Even in a room with an open widow, the smoke from one cigarette can linger for over 2 hours. The pollution from second-hand smoke will also linger in your carpets, furnishings and walls which absorb the toxins and actually release them back into the air! Wow, did not know that little fact.
So what can we do? Well, quit smoking in the house! Okay the obvious stated, let’s get real and come up with a viable solution. There are air purifiers out there that will take care of this problem for you, but which is the best option for you? I can say without a doubt that the Allerair 5000 DXS, 5000 DS along with the Allerair 6000 DXS & 6000 DS will clean the air. These units feature a special tar-trapping filter which removes the airborne tar particles, protecting the main filters. This filter allows the large, deep bed activated carbon filter to work more efficiently. Unpack, plug in and turn it on. All you have to do now is breathe.
If you have headaches, “You may need an air purifier”.
If you have an irritation of the sinuses, “you may need an air purifier”.
If your throat is irritated, “You may need an air purifier”.
If you are feeling fatigued, “You may need an air purifier”.
If you are in a building where more than 20% of the occupants are experiencing adverse health effects, then you might want to look into the indoor air quality.
It may be that the nature of the business is such that unless properly handled, emissions into the workplace space can and will create health issues. Not only does this put employees at risk of poor health & quality of life, it also causes a loss of production and increased medical costs. I would suggest for business such as funeral homes, law enforcement, libraries & archives, Printing & graphics, dental labs, Hospitality, to name a few, that they would benefit from an industrial strength air cleaner. Electrocorp Air Filtration Systems design their units to specifically address the different air quality problems experienced in different industries.
In our quest to become energy efficient we have essentially sealed our homes up. Now I am not saying this is a bad thing. Doing anything to save our environment and lessen our carbon footprint is a good thing, hands down! Now however, in doing this, we have more stale air in our homes than ever before. With the minimal air exchange in our homes today, we also have an increase in moisture which leads to mold and release of toxins, which our families breathe in on a daily basis.
As evidenced, allergies in children are common, in fact more common than ever before. I found comments from a family with a 4 year old whom had been sick for 4 months and on a Nebulizer twice a day. Lucky for this child, he had parents whom went looking for a better solution. What they found was that placing an air purifier, in this case the Allerair 5000 Exec, in his room. He made a complete recovery! No more medication, he stopped wheezing and sleeps through the night. One comment they made surprised me, but actually makes sense, is that the air purifier provided a source of “white noise” which they believe also helps him sleep.
I commend these parents for looking past medication as a solution. Although there is a place for medication to treat different maladies, sometimes alternative methods are the answer. My daughter had bladder problems when she was young and doctors put her on medication and when that did not work , more and stronger medication. That is when we did our research and on the advice of a friend started looking into chiropractors as an answer. In short, we took her off the medication, which was so strong it made her drowsy, and started the adjustments. Problem solved!
I have been known to some as the plant lady. I love gardening and have 14 indoor plants. It is true that plants do reduce airborne microbes, molds and increase humidity. The increased humidity unfortunately can itself lead to increased levels of mold and VOC’s
Studies done between 1989 and 2006 have stated “the performance of houseplants as air cleaners have little benefit for removing indoor air of VOC in residential and commercial buildings”. The real solution for areas with heavy concentrations of Volatile Organic Compounds, Chemicals and odors would be the Allerair 5000 DX Vocarb. This unit has a blend of carbon in an extra deep-bed filter, which absorbs the harmful toxins and has a micro-HEPA filter for particles.
Alright lets talk about Tobacco smoke. Do we really understand what is in a cigarette. Well I have researched this and there are about 4,000 chemicals released when you burn a cigarette. There are over 70 cancer causing chemicals, with hundreds of other poisons and of coarse let us not forget the nicotine. Nicotine, that highly addictive drug that once you are hooked on it, it is like your best friend and your worst enemy all at the same time. I know of what I speak, I am again, for probably the 100th time, trying to quit.
For all who have or do smoke in their homes I can tell you that an air purifier will help clear the air. Featuring a special tar trapping filter to remove the airborne tar particles therefore protecting the main filters, these units the Allerair 5000 DS, 5000 DXS, 6000 DS and 6000 DXS are the air purifiers I would check out.
Traveling? You can take this little beauty with you. For me traveling means hotels. Nice hotels. Trust me over the years traveling with my husband and kids I wish I had had one of these with me. There was the motel in ClearWater, a lesson in mold control definitely needed there! Stopping at road side motels, always a treat, especially when smoking was allowed everywhere, carpets everywhere, can we talk!!
The Allerair AirTube Exec, Supreme Exec, Vocarb and Supreme Vocarb are a great companion for the frequent traveler! These units allow you to breathe clean air where ever you go. They have the convenience of a portable unit in a compact size, for use on desktops & small spaces up to 100 square feet. Great in a bedroom or home office as well. A popular choice for allergy and asthma sufferers! For those who filtration of airborne particles, chemicals and odors is a must, no matter where ever they are!
FYI: Husband no longer has a say on where we stay.
